Isabella was the pioneer for our Thalassemia Community to fight for better treatment and longevity of  life for our Thalassemia patients.
While Desferol was used as part of the treatment for Thalassemia in Europe and other Canadian Provinces; but unavailable in British Columbia; consequently, with the help of her family and medical team, she lobbied the B. C. Government until a law was passed that made a change in the treatment protocol for her and for all Thalassemia patients in British Columbia.
Today this treatment may not be seem as a big deal, because the available option for chelation are many as well as other treatments, but at the time in the late 70’s and early 80’s, it was a huge step.
Isabella fought vigorously to overcome the numerous obstacles that she encountered during her brief life. Sadly, it was too late for her to benefit from this new therapy, as her major organs were too damaged from iron overload.
She fought vigorously to overcome her many social and health obstacles, until her body could fight no longer. She passed away 2 months and 8 days before her 15th birthday.
Isabella was known by her family and friends for her tremendous zest and respect for life; with a sparkle in her eyes and a contagious smile, she taught those around her to appreciate their lives and to love one another. This is her legacy she wishes to leave behind.
